A Slow Day & Some Reflections
A Slow Day
Susie, Matt & Erin went to Ventimiglia to shop at the Friday open market. I decided to stay home since I had been there twice and had already made my purchases for the trip (2 hawaiian shirts :-) ) Plus I have to go and buy a bunch of groceries today, we are running pretty low on a lot of things... especially Limoncello and PepsiMax :-)
So I thought I might spend a few minutes giving you my halftime report (yes I know we are way past the halfway point of our trip). So here are a few of my thoughts, observations, rants... :
- The weather has been almost perfect! We had a couple days of rain last week and today it is pretty warm. Other than that, everyday has been sunny and in the mid/upper 70's. Here is what the past week looked like... Not too shabby :-)
Biot - a very picturesque town!, The Swedish Invasion,
Biot
Today we are off to Biot, a sleepy little town (population ~9,000) about 45 minutes from Nice. First a few facts (Wiki):
When we first got off the bus we noticed this piece of art.
- Once inhabited by Celts, Biot was conquered by the Roman legion two thousand years ago, which remained there for about five hundred years.
- In 1209 it was a village of Knights Templar who were replaced in 1312 by the Knights of Malta.
- From 12th to 14th century, remarkable result of original charters from the archives of the Temple, gives us a perfect idea of the "castrum" and the village of Biot. In 1209, the Count Alfonso II of Provence gives to the "Order of the Temple" all his possessions in Biot. The Knights Templar then buy the best land in the country, and founded the castrum, a place that soon will become one of the most important religious institutions of the entire region and a place of pilgrimage due to numerous relics from Jerusalem.
- In 1387 the town was destroyed by war. In 1470 Biot was repopulated with 50 families emigrated from western Liguria, which became the majority of the population.
- Today Biot is known for their pottery & glassworks, especially "bubble glass".

Eze, Great Views, Awesome Moon
Eze
For today's adventure we headed out to Eze, about 35 minutes by bus. First a few facts about the village:
Luckily I was able to rent a helicopter to bring you an aerial shot of Eze so you could get a better idea :-)
- Eze is a medieval village perched on a narrow rocky peak overlooking the Mediterranean sea (almost 2,000ft above the sea)
- The area surrounding Eze was first populated around 2000 BC. The earliest occurrence of the name "Èze" can be found in the maritime books of Antonin as a bay called 'St. Laurent of Èze.' A hoard of ancient Greek silver phialai (drinking vessel), dating from 300 BC, was found, in Èze, in the late nineteenth century
- The area was subsequently occupied not only by the Romans, but also the Moors, who held the area for approximately 80 years until they were driven out by William of Provence in 973.
- The ancient fortified village still has some of its its 12th-century fortified castle (most of it was torn down in 1706)
Luckily I was able to rent a helicopter to bring you an aerial shot of Eze so you could get a better idea :-)
Rocky, Cap d'Ail, Matt & Erin Arrive
Earache My Eye...
So, I woke up in the middle of the night with a mosquito buzzing around my ear. All I could think about was the bugger crawling into my ear, biting me & waking up with an earache. The good news is I didn't wake-up with an earache... the bad news is the little shit bit me on my eyelid and I woke up looking like Rocky Balboa...
Ventimiglia, Mini Rant, Menton, Sand Exists
Ventimiglia - Again
Today is Friday and that means shopping in Ventimiglia, Europe's biggest open street market. You may recall we were in Ventimiglia last Friday. Susie needed to pick-up a few more items so we decided to hit the market quickly and then stop in Menton on the way back.
The great news is the rain/clouds have left and it is a beautiful sunny day!!!!
Here are a couple of shots on the way...

We were in Nice 3 years ago and noticed there was dog poop everywhere... it was a pooh minefield :-) Now, there is very little. Maybe this has helped. A FREE doggie poop bag dispenser with complete instruction. The little doggie looks soooo happy:
Rain Still Sucks!, St-Jean-Cap-Ferrat, Sandwich Cam Breaks New Ground & Limoncello Time
Sandy Leaves :-(
Sandy left for home this morning :-( I am worried that Susie might have some problems shopping without Sandy... but I'm sure she will cope :-)
Soooooo it was grey & periods of rain again today :-( We have stayed in Nice several times & this is the first time we have had 2 rainy days back to back. Usually if it rains in Nice it is a quick downpour and the clouds breakup in a hour or so. Not today. The good news is that tomorrow will be sunny and in the mid 70's YEAH!
So after we got Sandy to the airport, we did some really exciting things like cleaning, washing some clothes and catching up of this blog :-)
Susie also cooked up her world famousgreen eggs and ham... Here she is in the kitchen.

Rain Sucks!, Epic Fail @ St Paul de Vence, Cameras 101
It Rained & Rained :-(
OK... it was a grey & rainy day. But that didn't stop us from doing something. After all, this was Sandy's last day in Nice. So we headed off to St Paul de Vence, a lovely perched city about an hour bus from Nice. We were hoping that the weather would be better in St Paul. When we got off the bus... there was no rain YEAH!!! :-) The plan just might work!!!
Of course within 5 minutes (and I'm not kidding) the rain started :-(
Soooooooooo I got no pictures :-(
HOWEVER, that didn't stop Susie and Sandy from shopping... Actually I did buy a bottle of balsamic vinegar WITH a hint of truffle oil... very tasty!!!!
Since I didn't take any pictures, I found this pic from the interwebs... so you can see what the place looks like.

Saorge, We Make A Rare Find,
An Old Tired Perched City
Today we are off to Saorge, a perched city northeast of Nice near the Italian border. We will be taking a train and it will take about 90 minutes.
Here are a couple of shots on our walk to the train station.
This is our "go to" bakery. We get fresh croissants and baguettes almost everyday and they are awesome! Susie already knows all the workers & they know her by name :-)

Today's adventure started with a 1.5 hour train ride. But first we had to figure out where the train station was located. The train was NOT a public train, it was a private company that operates a couple of trains to smaller towns. Luckily there was a street market nearby and we asked for directions.

HTML Sucks!
For some strange reason, the months for the posts are off by 1 month for some people. Some people have reported the blog post dates are for May while others see June. I doubt I will have time to figure this out now. Sorry :-(
Sorry for any confusion... all the dates are for the month of JUNE.
But first, a few facts about the city:

Ventimiglia - Shopping Nirvana For Susie & Sandy!
So after a quick breakfast we headed out to catch a train for Ventimiglia, which is located just across the border in Italy. Every Friday they have an open street market which is purported to be Europe's biggest. But first, a few facts about the city:
- Prehistoric settlements have been discovered in the area.
- In 180 BC, it came under Rome's control and accepted its laws. In 49 BC it obtained Roman citizenship from Julius Caesar (100-44 BC) and it was called "Albintimilium" in the Augustan Age.
- In Roman times the city was enriched with villas, aqueducts, fountains, a public forum, a theater and baths.
- Through the centuries, the town has been part of Italy and France.
- Ventimiglia is home to the Biblioteca Civica Aprosiana. A must-see for any bibliophile, this huge public library, founded by the writer and Augustan monk Angelico Aprosio in 1648, is one of the oldest in Italy. Somehow I don't think Susie & Sandy (the power shopper they are) will be visiting this library :-) )
OK... enough with the history lesson, the girls came to shop.
We got there at around 10am which is the official opening of the market. The market is situated in a park and extends to the boardwalk which is next to the beach. Here are a few shots to get an idea of the place...
Our Park, the Nice Beaches (Maybe), Villefranche-sur-Mer & a Mini Rant (EXTRA LONG!)
Our Parks
After another delicious and nutritious breakfast compliments of chef Susie it was off to visit the Nice beaches. But we decided to first checkout the park across the street from our apartment. It is a very green place and it had the obligatory couple of bums sleeping on the benches. Other than that it was a nice place. Here are a few pics:The Trip Begins, TSA Security Lines, A 70 Minute Pizza and Some Weirdness
The Journey Begins
So we begin.
Sandy (who worked with me & Susie at Miller Brewing back in the day and will be with us until June 16) picked us up at 3pm for a 9:20pm SAS flight out of Chicago. We figured that with all the delays with the TSA security lines we wanted to be at the airport by 5pm, allowing us 4 hours to get through security. The drive was uneventful and we got to the airport around 5pm. After we checked our bags we headed for the dreadful security lines. We read horror stories of 3+ hour at Chicago! Here is what we were expecting:
